The challenge
Two thirds of Uganda’s rural population is lacking access to safe water due to insufficient water distribution networks and systems.
The innovation
Builders Products Industries (BPI) is a plumbing product manufacturer selling pipes to rural farming communities at affordable prices in order to improve access to water for farms and households. Sourcing and producing partially locally, BPI contracts small scale miners and artisans, thus creating a stable and increased income to them. Further, the social business provides employment to vulnerable women and youth to work in the factory, mines or retail shops.
The impact
To date, over 2,500 small scale miners and artisans have benefited from an increased income through BPI as purchaser, buying their products for up to 20% over market price. Up to 300 women and youth have been employed and received income for their families.
